Applicants with primary residence in Vienna may order copies of Austrian birth, death and marriage certificates online from the Vienna Registry Office.

Austrian birth certificates, marriage certificates and death certificates are available from civil registry offices (Standesamt) across Austria. A civil registry office can issue copies of any certificate registered in Austria. Applications for certificates from abroad can be submitted to an Austrian diplomatic representations abroad. Austrian birth, death and marriage certificates are restricted - only the person named in the certificate, immediate family o those with a demonstrated a legal interest may apply for a copy.

Applications in Austria may submitted to the State police department (Landespolizeidirektion) or police department (Landespolizeikommisariat). In Vienna, you can apply to the Police Department (Polizeikommissariat). In cities without a state police department or in a city or municipality without a police department, apply to the Mayor.

From outside Austria, applications may be submitted to an Austrian diplomatic representations abroad. Austrian Embassy or ConsulateExternal link (opens in new tab)

Except where applications are made online (using ID Austria or EU Login), the applicant must appear in person to the issuing authority, either when they submit their application or when they collect their certificate, in order to verify their identity.

Special criminal record certificates (e.g. for children and youth welfare or for care and support) cannot be obtained online and will only be issued following confirmation from the employer and/or organization requesting them.
