Document legalization (or attestation) is a procedure which authenticates a public Cayman Islands document so that it can be submitted in another country for official or legal purposes - for example, if you need to submit a Cayman Islands birth certificate to the authority or embassy of another country, it will often need to be legalized.

Legalizing a document in the Cayman Islands certifies the authenticity of the signature appearing on the document as that of an authorized public official in the Cayman Islands and confirms the capacity of that official.

A Certificate of Incorporation is issued to the company upon incorporation in the Cayman Islands, confirming that the company was registered upon its establishment under the Cayman Islands Companies Law.

A Certificate of Incumbency confirms when the company was incorporated and current structure, registered office address and details of directors and shareholders.

A Certificate of Good Standing confirms that the company is duly organised under the laws of the Cayman Islands and that it is in good standing for the current year in terms of annual filing obligations.

A Company Search Report confirms the current status of the company (Active, strike-off pending, struck-off or dissolved), but does not confirm that the company is in Good Standing. The Search Report also includes basic details about the company, including: entity name and type (Limited Liability Company, Exempt Company etc.), date of registration, address of registered office, share capital, business nature.

Apostilles can be obtained from the digital police clearance certificate issued by the Criminal Records Office of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

Police Clearance Certificates are available from the Criminal Records Office of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. Applications may be made online (you can only apply for your own certificate). A certificate confirming an absence of criminal record in the Cayman Islands can be requested in paper or digital format. Both formats are suitable for authentication to use abroad with an Apostille Stamp.

There is no set period of time for which the Cayman Islands Police Clearance Certificates are considered to be valid. However, you should check with the recipient authority whether they require a certificate issued within the last 3 or 6 months.

To obtain an Apostille stamp in the Cayman Islands, the power of attorney must be signed and sworn before a Cayman Islands notary. An Apostille can then be obtained from the office of the Governor in George Town.
